Have you read "The Beatles Second Album" by Dave Marsh? He's an experienced and respected music critic, and he makes some pretty grand claims that this album is the definition of who the Beatles were. I haven't read it - just flipped through it. You might enjoy this book and his writing style, even if he is a Bruce Springsteen biographer and apologist.
Thanks Gary - hadn't heard of it before your mention but have read up on it a bit - the content ('unofficial' US version) and tone pretty much puts me off... "The book is no fun. None. It is almost relentlessly sour, carping, and petty. Come to the music, Marsh has nothing very original to say, and certainly nothing inspiring" http://www.heydullblog.com/books/dave-marsh-beatles-second-album/ Let me know if you ever read the book and disagree...!
I haven't read it. Marsh has a reputation, for sure. But he sure loves the band, and he has some interesting insights into how this album came about and why it's more important than people think.
