We hit a root chord (A major).
The band drops out for a bar and pow!
We’ve changed key!
There was no warning.
Then we’re back on A major again.
Was that a passing chord or a key change?
If it was a key change what key are we in now?
Blam! – D minor again!!!
What kind of nutter does a key change on the first (or second) chord of the chorus?

I'm just throwing something theory-ish out here, but could it be a mode change? It could if the song itself is in D major and not A major. Then it's simply D to Dm. Just a thought.
